Anaar (Pomegranate)

The juicy red fruit with so many seeds is known to be a source of food and herbal medicines for thousands of years. These end number of seeds are a symbol of fertility, as out of a single fruit many morecould come. For the Romans, this fruit resembles marriage and the brides in older days used to deck themselves up with the pomegranate-twig wreaths. The seeds of this fruit appeared in the Greek mythology where goddess Demeter, who is the protector of grain, crops, and the earth’s bounty, and her daughter Persephone were one day picking flowers when Hades, the king of the underworld, captured her and took her to his dark world so that he can be his bride. Sad and grief-stricken, Demeter then refused to let crops grow which resulted in the starvation of entire humankind. But Zeus ordered Hades to release Persephone and then before letting her go, he made her eat some of these pomegranate seeds. After eating those magical seeds Persephone could never be free of the place and she was hence destined to spend a part of each year there. For all those months, the world turns barren, but when Persephone returns to her mother, the earth again starts producing flowers, fruit, and grain. Some people believed that it originated from Persia while some believe that the origin of this fruit is from North Western India. India is known to be the largest producer of this fruit and there are almost 20 varieties cultivated here.
